Benefits of Omega-3
Many of us forget to give extra love and attention to the biggest organ in our body, the skin. As a young adult, I try to protect my skin barrier now to prevent future damage. Recently, I started incorporating omega-3 fatty acids into my diet and noticed some changes. I have had rosacea since I was a child and tend to always have red cheeks with some inflammation. By adding fish oil to my supplement regimen, I noticed my face looked less inflamed due to the fatty acid composition in my skin. According to Aveeno, “keeping your fatty acid levels up also helps minimize the effect of sun damage and improve sensitive skin condition” (6 Facts Omega-3 Benefits for Skin: Skinmindbalance). I also noticed my increase in omega-3 minimized my breakouts due to the skin’s sebum production. Aveeno also recommends omega-3 to people who have rough, dry, or dermatitis-prone skin.
Foods High in Omega-3 Impacting our Skin
Our diet plays a crucial role in not only our overall health but also our skin health. Nourishing our skin from the inside out will help keep your skin glowing and radiant. Fatty fish, known to be a high source of omega-3 fatty acids, can help our skin fight conditions such as psoriasis and lupus. Salmon, a common fatty fish, also contains Vitamin E which has antioxidants to strengthen our skin.
One of America’s top favorite fruit, avocado, is rich in healthy fats. In a recent study completed at UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, “avocado consumption was shown to increase skin elasticity and firmness” (Eating an Avocado Daily Increases..). I love a good avocado face mask but consuming it will give you more nutritional value than topical use. I enjoy avocado toast with a poached egg to start my day. Another way to use avocado is by cooking with avocado oil!
