Savoring Summer: Mindful Eating Tips for BBQs, Picnics, and Parties

These events all commonly have a wide spread of food to indulge in. When working on your nutrition and overall health, it is important to stay aware of mindful eating and how to do so in these settings.

Mindful eating is all about staying in tune with your body and paying attention to your hunger cues. Eating when hungry and stopping when full can be hard when you are surrounded by a lot of food and people. Enjoying each plate and bite of food will increase your body to mind connection when it comes to food choices.

An important tip is to be surrounded by judgement free people that do not make you feel guilt for eating the delicious food around you. It is possible to eat to feel joy with no guilt to follow. Eating the food you love surrounded by the people you love is a great tradition and way to spend time in the summer.

Eating food is an experience that should be enjoyed during celebrations without worrying about the specific calories in each item. Giving yourself the free range to enjoy the foods you love is crucial for the enjoyment of the overall event. It however IS possible to create a balanced plate of all macronutrients while also enjoying the food. Choosing protein, carbs, and fats while considering vegetables and fruits your plate can be delicious and nutritious.

Many of these summer events include plentyf of “picky foods” such as a wide range of appetizers. There are also often family-style meals or buffets to follow. These displays of food make it very easy for someone to overeat. You can be conversing while picking at a cheese platter and suddenly you are uncomfortably full without noticing along the way. It is important to slowly chew the food you have and pay attention to the rate at which it is being consumed. A great way to do this is by taking advantage of the appetizer plates provided and not pick from the main platter. When eating from a buffet, once you finish your first helping, stop, relax, and have a conversation before grabbing another to ensure that your hunger cues are correct. Listening to your body will allow you to consume what your body needs and wants. You want to enjoy the food you are consuming, not rush through. Eat these delectable summer foods to be comfortably full and it will increase the enjoyment of the rest of the time spent at the event.
